We kicked off with tax updates from Vialto:
- The UK Autumn Statement brought about some changes, yes, but nothing lining our pockets (or expats’) too much. National Insurance changes (again!) may cause some headaches for your payroll teams, but it probably won’t be the last time!
- Keep an eye on UK immigration changes as the Home Office will set out new guidelines for business travellers coming to the UK from January 2024. New proposals could include allowing travellers to carry out more activities while in the UK for short-term business trips.
- Around the region, it does seem to be the Netherlands 30% ruling and its upcoming changes that will keep teams busiest, especially with all those various scenarios! Read more here.
We huddled up next to discuss techniques in making Global Mobility more strategic. One of the many takeaway thoughts: “is it harder to be more strategic when working from home?!”
Caroline Thorley-Farrer from Worley gave a fantastic update next on what she’s been going through at Worley. From a company rebrand to restructuring the team and its work, layered with a unique company culture, it’s not been the easiest of rides! But smooth seas do not make skilful sailors ⛵
Immigration updates from Vialto went down a treat!
- Immigration continues to be used as a political tool. The rise in right wing governments sees a paradox when skills shortages mean many are actually making it easier for migrants to enter.
- In the first three quarters of 2019 just over 2,200 people from the EU were turned away at the border – compared with 11,600 in the first three quarters of 2023. That’s a five-fold increase. Why? Maybe there’s confusion from border officers between those with pre-settled and settled status (who can use their ID cards) and those without such a status (who have to use a passport). Maybe it’s still a Brexit hangover where EU citizens are not realising the changes in their ability to just arrive and work.
- Don’t forget the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is rolling out gradually, and more so from 1st February 2024 for nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
Lastly, we had our very fun debate on costs versus employee experience. If you want to know more about these events next time, you’ll just have to attend!
